We have all had those lazy evenings – mine normally always occur on a Sunday – when my stomach is pleading for something really delicious, indulgent and filling, yet the last thing I feel like doing is getting up and going through the hassle to whip up something from scratch requiring a lot of patience and ingredients.
So on such evenings, a firm favourite still remains the simple, yet scrumptious, toasted cheese sandwich.
Having eaten many a toasted cheese sandwich in my life, pretty much tasting all the same even with the occasional variation of additional tomato, onion or ham, I didn’t think it possible for someone to introduce me to “the ulitimate” cheese toastie - the Croque Monsieur – surpassing toasties you have eaten before. Try it and your life will never be the same!
Croque Monsieur
4 slices wholemeal bread
2 tsp Dijon mustard
80g grated Gruyère cheese
2 slices ham
30g unsalted butter
Method:
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
2. Spread the mustard evenly over each slice of bread. Top two of the slices with half of the grated cheese followed by a slice of ham each, then finish with the remaining cheese on top. Sandwich together with the other two slices of bread.
3. Heat the butter in a large frying pan until foaming, then add the sandwiches and fry for 1 to 2 minutes on each side, or until golden-brown.
4. Transfer the sandwiches to a baking tray and place into the oven for 4 to 5 minutes, or until the cheese has melted.
5. Serve immediately.
