In the Drakensberg

~ by Kerry

On Thursday and Friday I was spoilt with a media trip to the Orion Mont-Aux-Sources hotel in the northern Drakensberg. The hotel has been around for decades, and its name actually means "source of the river", as it is near to the mouth of the Tugela river, the second highest river in SA. The incredible views are offset by mouthwatering cuisine prepared by chef Pienaar - who incidentally worked at the hotel a number of years ago, then left, and was recruited back with the hotel undergoing some major renovations.

The food is prepared with only the freshest ingredients, and we indulged in some magnificent flavour combinations at dinner on Thursday night. Starters consisted of fried halloumi with a sweet chutney on a bed of rocket, followed by fillet done to perfection with a creamy biltong hollandaise sauce and seasonal veggies. And to end off, a mini pecan pie with cream and beautiful sugarwork. Delicious!

Then to sit on your balcony afterwards with the fresh air pouring into your lungs - what more could you want?
