Whilst on our Karoo food shoot recently, with Tyghe and Emma from Taste of the Karoo, it dawned on me how we all - even the best of foodies - get stuck in a rut when it comes to cooking, as well as ordering when we go out. We all seem to have our "safety nets" and usual dishes we always order, but hardly ever go out on a limb and try something completely different or something we haven't heard of before. Tyghe was cooking up a wildebeest sirloin, and the whole idea of eating a wildebeest just seemed a little strange to me. Not only is it quite a funny-looking animal, but I probably would never order it even when presented with it on a menu.
As with most new things I was pleasantly surprised - it was simply delicious and just made me think of all the things I am missing out on by not really looking at a menu properly or trying a different restaurant than the standby favourite. We have such great restaurants, produce, chefs and dishes in this country, that we owe it to our taste buds to try something new. Whether going out to a restaurant or cooking at home, peruse the isles, ask friends, do a little research and we can all start enjoying the pleasures of the diversity of food again.
